How Onit Coffee came to be is a refreshingly good story about hardwork and the American dream. Shadi Khattab, a 25 year old immigrant from Syria, grew up with his father working three jobs. He aspired to open a business and focus on human-to-human interaction, especially for minorities everywhere. Shadi was inspired by Middle Eastern culture’s focus on coffee and tea, and especially, the value of quality. He was instantly attracted to the special atmosphere of other coffee companies like Dutch Bros. While earning a business degree in Sac State, he planned Onit Coffee for an entrepreneurial class, and worked on it for four years, before making it a reality in April 2020.
Two years into his plan, Shadi and his team invested in a dual-lane drive-through off of Howe and Marconi Ave. As this kiosk was being built, they decided to boost growth by opening a state-of-the-art gourmet coffee truck to share their beverages with all of Sacramento. They had over thirty events lined up in big venues with thousands of expected attendees, collaborations with iHeartRadio and Entercom Sacramento, and even a contract with the CFO of Sac State for the truck to be on the very campus that inspired the business!
This all came to an end with the COVID-19 pandemic closing down venues and cancelling events. Onit Coffee struggled to find places to park and serve customers, and at one point, made less than $50 a day. Shadi and his team had invested $200,000 into the truck, as well as the employees who relied on it for work. So he decided to park the truck at his other company, Precision MD Cosmetic Surgery Center. Precision MD is a top cosmetics center that specializes in fat reduction, beauty enhancement, recovery, and mens’ and womens’ health procedure — a pretty unconventional candidate for a coffee stop. However, this story of resilience went viral, and the truck launched into success.
Onit Coffee specializes in coffee made with quality-sourced coffee beans, cold brew, fresh lemonades, milkshakes, smoothies, blended and iced teas, as well as their special line of protein shakes and their Onergy energy drinks. They have a great range of options including milk alternatives like oat milk and almond milk, sugar-free options, and more!
Onit Coffee’s goal is to create an inclusive space by providing equal opportunities for all of employees, and impacting and empowering customers. Part of this goal is donating and partnering with local charities like Sacramento Food Bank and Sacramento Street Medicine.
