The Oldest Tree on Earth - A living fossil
Ginkgo biloba the only living species in the division Ginkgophyta, aka the maidenhair tree
Ginkgo biloba are the most distinctive and beautiful of all deciduous trees. Native to China, its fossils date back 270 million years!
The ginkgo certainly stands out with unique, fan-shaped leaves turn a stunning yellow color in the fall. It can tolerate many urban conditions including heat, air pollution, salt and confined spaces, all while establishing easily.
Ginkgo biloba can be expected to grow in Hardiness Zones 3–8. The ginkgo grows to a height of 25–50' and a spread of 25–35' at maturity This tree grows at a medium rate, with height increases of 13–24" per year. Full sun and partial shade are best for this tree, meaning it prefers a minimum of four hours of direct, unfiltered sunlight each day. The ginkgo grows in acidic, alkaline, loamy, moist, rich, sandy, silty loam, well-drained, wet and clay soils. It tolerates moderate drought and wetness but doesn’t grow well in hot, dry climates.
According to Sunset Western Garden Ginkgo Biloba:
• Climate zones 1-10, 12, 14-24, 28, 30-44
• Full sun
• Regular to moderate water
• Growth rate: moderate
This graceful tree is attractive in any season, but it’s especially lovely in fall, when the leathery, light green, fan-shaped leaves suddenly turn gold. They remain on the tree for a time, then drop quickly and cleanly. Most mature ginkgos are 35 to 50 feet tall, but they can reach 70 to 80 feet; spread ranges from a typical 30 to 40 feet to as much as 80 feet. Sometimes gawky in youth, they become well proportioned with age, with a narrow to spreading or umbrella-shaped silhouette.
Ginkgos are also popular subjects for growing as penjing and bonsai; they can be kept artificially small and tended over centuries.
Our Seeds are sourced from a 25-year-old female tree in Modesto, California. All seeds are harvested each year starting in mid-October. The seeds are cleaned and cold stored until sold.
